Sudden Face Pigmentation

Quite a few patients suffering from sudden facial darkening usually come to me with shock and anguish. They carry an old photograph to show the contrast between then and now! What is it that causes the skin to suddenly turn dark? It is a condition called Lichen Planus Pigmentosus. The pigmentation usually starts suddenly and involves sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, arms, and elbow folds. Certain hair dyes, even those which are henna-based have been found to trigger this condition. The condition if left untreated can run a long and progressive course.
