Acne is an androgenic disorder caused by the effects of hormones called androgens. These include testosterone and DHEA-S which are largely considered as male hormones, but are present in both men and women. Women however are known to be more vulnerable to hormonal acne as they go through more fluctuations as compared to men such as puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. It should not be misunderstood here that with acne one almost always has an abnormality in the hormonal levels. Often the tests reveal completely normal hormonal levels. This happens in cases where the oil glands are genetically more sensitive to hormonal changes. Thus even with the normal hormonal fluctuations, the oil glands react hyper sensitively and increase their production of oil causing acne bouts. The approach in such cases is to first eradicate the infection and follow it up with a good maintenance regime for optimum oil control.
A sudden bout of acne can be controlled by a four-step skin care, which includes Exfoliate, Treat, Hydrate and Protect. Exfoliation helps to remove excess skin oils and plugs within the oil glands. It also helps to remove acne scars and brightens up the skin. Treatment includes controlling oil secretion and clearing up bacterial infection. Even though acne prone skin is generally oily, a lightweight moisturizer acts as a natural barrier and gives a soft feeling to the skin. Protecting acne prone skin from direct sun, dust and pollution using physical or topical barriers allows faster healing of acne.
