My skin is very oily. Because of that I get a lot of whiteheads on my face. However I never get exposed to dirt as I work in an air conditioned office. So why do I get blackheads. The blackheads look so ugly; I cannot resist and tend to squeeze them out with my nails. What skin care should I follow to get rid of whiteheads and blackheads? Payal Mehra, 26 yrs.

Both blackheads and whiteheads are forms of acne. They are caused due to excess accumulation of oil and dead skin cells in the oil glands. Blackheads, also known as open comedones are follicles that have an enlarged opening. The dark color is not dirt but rather a mixture of oil and dead skin cells that have oxidized when exposed to air. Whiteheads, also known as closed comedones are follicles that are filled with the same material, but have only a very microscopic opening to the skin surface. As the atmospheric air cannot reach the follicle, the material is not oxidized and appears white. Squeezing blackheads might seem very tempting, but it can cause infections and even scarring of the skin with tiny pits. Invasive methods of using sharp objects to scoop them out or repeated scrubbing of the skin should be strictly avoided. The key to skin care for preventing blackheads is consistency. Using good skin care helps to maintain the follicle health and prevents clogging. Choose products as per your skin type and stick to a routine. For most people, cleansing, moisturizing and exfoliating are sufficient. Others may require special blotting sheets and oil absorbing face masks to maintain a clear skin. A regular cleansing routine prevents the blackheads from hardening and makes them glide out easily. Oil based make-up should be avoided and replaced by water based ones. If your blackheads are stubborn, you may need medicines which work by increasing the cell turnover and reducing the stickiness of the clogged material. This helps to expel the blackhead returning the pore to normal.
