White patches don’t have to mean end of the world. They can be treated effectively. Read on…
I have white patches on my skin since 8 years. Doctors have diagnosed it as Leucoderma. Presently they are in areas like my arms, back and legs. However I am worried about them spreading on my face or exposed areas. Nobody in my family has white patches, then why did I get them?
Leucoderma is an autoimmune disorder, the exact cause of which is not known. However various factors are known to precipitate Leucoderma. Emotional stress, hereditary factors, worms, burns and skin injuries are some of them. Only about 30% of the patients are found to have a family history, about 20% of them are found to have an underlying disease. Sometimes diseases like hyperthyroidism, Anemia, and Diabetes are known to aggravate the condition. At the same time, having these diseases does not mean that one will develop leucoderma. For many, the diagnosis of Leucoderma spells doom. Almost everyone even those with just 1-2 patches tend to imagine the worse. However, you need to relax as majority of the cases are amenable to treatment and respond well to re-pigmentation therapies. Certain Nutrients and phytochemicals like tyrosine, amino acids, vitamin b12 etc are good for leucoderma. Iron rich foods like Lotus stem, sesame and pumpkin seeds are found to have a beneficial effect on leucoderma and form a very good adjunct to the main line of treatment.
