One should rule out a condition called PCOD i.e Polycystic Ovarian Disease. PCOD can cause a sudden surge of male hormone called DHT in a woman’s body. The DHT causes the skin to produce more oil thereby leading to severe acne breakouts. The acne in such cases is usually severe and may not respond well to the conventional line of treatment unless PCOD is also treated simultaneously. Apart from acne, the DHT can also cause weight gain, irregular periods and increased growth of hair on face, chest and stomach also called hirsutism.
Not all acne cause scarring of the skin. For example, in mild cases of acne vulgaris, there is no scarring. The skin often heals with absolutely no trace of acne. Amongst the various types of acne, scarring is most commonly seen with Cystic acne. Cystic acne is the harshest and the most painful form of acne. It may initially start as a simple whitehead or a blackhead but begins affecting deeper tissues forming a boil or a cyst. The cyst then heals and forms a scar. The shallow scars give the skin a typical wave-like appearance making it look old and withered. The deeper ones can be more deforming making the skin appear like a cobbled road. To prevent scars, early treatment is the best solution. The aim of the treatment should be to prevent newer acne thereby minimizing the scarring. Severe acne should never be ignored as just a part of growing up.
