Ask the hair expert, Dr Shahid Shamsher…..

While we have spoken so much about the present day treatments of hair loss, let’s take a peek in the future and see what kind of treatments maybe possible 5-10 years from today.

Future of medical treatment.

The limitations of present day medications are especially pronounced in cases of hereditary hair loss, where patients are simply not aware of having genetic hair loss in the early stages and by the time the treatment is started, limited improvements are possible. In the future we can hope for medication, which is so safe, that it can be given to everyone combined with shampoo or conditioner, just like fluoride is nowadays combined with toothpaste and prevents teeth from falling out. That way it does not matter if one carries the faulty genes or not, in either case you are insured from having the hair loss.

Future of Surgical Treatments.

Present day surgical treatments involve rearranging the hair from one area of the head to the other areas. In these procedures no new hair is actually added and since only a limited amount of hair can be rearranged, only a limited coverage is possible. The future of surgical treatments will therefore be Hair Cloning. Hair cloning will provide us a limitless supply of the person’s own hair thus allowing us to implant as much hair as we wish, even to the extent of having more hair than what we were born with.

And the Final hair loss treatment.

The ultimate hair loss treatment will be Gene therapy. Gene therapy is based on a very simple logic, which is as follows – Ever wondered why the hair loss is only from the top of the head and not the sides and the back. This is because the hair roots on the sides and back are genetically programmed to withstand the damage and therefore do not fall. Gene therapy are the processes by which we identify these genes that prevent hair loss. Once they are correctly identified they could simply be activated in the hair roots on the top of the head as well, preventing hair loss from that area too. As simple as it sounds, the real problem lies in identifying the right set of genes. But it’s only a question of time before it happens, and when it does hair loss could become extinct for mankind.
