People start using all sorts of oils and shampoos for dandruff which never seems to go. Trichologist Dr Shahid Shamsher tells us why.
Before treating dandruff, it is important to understand the type of dandruff as the treatment for each type differs.
Type 1- Seborrhea.
Every scalp secretes its own natural oil called sebum, which when scratched comes out as white particles on the finger nails and is often mistaken as dandruff. Correct hair care involving the right shampoo and correct method of washing is often enough to deal with it.
Type 2- Scalp infections.
When the sebum is not correctly treated, the next complication is scalp infection. In this there is much more itching, boils on the scalp, more hair loss etc, leading to baldness. Hair care alone will not work. Medical treatment is also required.
Type 3- Scalp diseases.
This category includes diseases like psoriasis. It is worst form of dandruff as it tends to spread to the body areas. The best thing to do here is start medication early as then its spread to body parts can be controlled.
