How is recession affecting hair loss problems?
Well its good and bad. The good part is that a huge number of patients who have relocated to USA, have come back to hometown, so the damage which change of water does to hair has been reduced. The bad part is that there is a 30-40% spurt in hair loss problems with people saying they are more stressed out due to fear of losing their jobs.
Is this a new type of hair loss?
Not really. Work related stress has always been a very big cause of hairloss. It causes a condition where the hair becomes prematurely old, so that the person not only loses more hair, more faster, but somehow even starts graying out earlier. The difference is that previously people would report stress due to high work load, now the stress is caused by the fear of losing job anytime. The pecularity here is that this kind of stress is seen more in people who have a job, but with a lurking fear of losing it anytime, rather than in people who have already lost heir jobs. So it’s the impending feeling of doom which is more dangerous for the hair.
Is there a change in the choice of treatment patterns at these times?
Well there is obvious slowdown in people opting for the more expensive options like hair transplant, with more and more patients preferring the easier route of medication and other natural methods. But its not just the economics of treatments which is the only deciding factor. For example one patient postponed his plans of undergoing a transplant as he might have to relocate to another city for better job prospects and another patient said that due to reduced work force his company would not allow him to take one week leave and in fact he might lose his job if he were to do so. The guiding principle in these times is to at least save the hair, till better days come.
