Incompatible Products Cause Hair Loss

Incompatible Products Cause Hair Loss

Trichologist Dr Shahid Shamsher talks of cross reactions between various hair products which leads to more hair fall.

What is product incompatibility?

It is phenomena in which products used at the same time react with each other causing damage to the hair. For example lets say you are using Shampoo A and Conditioner B. While individually they maybe very good products, but when used at the same time, they react with each other and in the process often aggravate the hair loss problems.

How common is this?

Very common, and unfortunately, also very much unnoticed. We all know that hair procedures like straightening, perming etc cause damage to the hair, but these procedures are done only by a small percentage of people. Product incompatibility on the other hand affects are much larger group of people, because this involves commonly used every day hair care products like shampoo, conditioner, oil, hair dyes, and even the water.

Which are the right products to use?

There is no completely right or completely wrong product. What may suit one person very well, may in fact worsen the condition for someone else. What is important to understand is your scalp-type and then choose any product accordingly. Often we use many products labeled herbal, thinking that they are safe to use, but the fact is that many of these products are very poorly manufactured and develop fungus when not stored properly.

But hair care is also very confusing.

I think we make it confusing for ourselves. If we see the hair care followed by the earlier generation, all they would do is wash the head regularly keep it clean. Now we have a far greater choice of products to use, but the irony is that our generation seems to have much more hair loss than the earlier generation did.
