Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic skin condition causing dryness, itching, and inflammation, often triggered by allergens, stress, or irritants.

Commonly referred to as eczema, Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic skin inflammatory condition that results in dryness, irritation, and itching. While it usually begins in childhood, eczema can occur in people of any age and skin type.

It is caused by a weakened skin barrier, which makes the skin more susceptible to environmental stressors, allergens, and other irritants. Stress, weather changes, certain fabrics, soaps, etc, are other triggers that can worsen the flare-ups.

Treatments for eczema include moisturizers, topical steroids, and simple home remedies, and general precautions can help manage symptoms and flare-ups.

Common Symptoms

  • Dry, sensitive skin: These skin types generally lose skin moisture easily, which makes them more prone to triggers, irritation, and inflammation.

  • Inflamed patchy skin: A Highly reactive immune system worsens the flare-ups and causes redness and swelling in affected areas.

  • Cracking or peeling: Severe dryness weakens the skin barrier, which results in intense itching that may cause painful cracks and peels.

  • Intense itching: Inflammation triggers nerve responses, which worsen itching, especially if there is stress, heat, and nighttime dryness.

  • Rough, scaly texture: Since dry skin does not shed normally, the skin cells build up on the surface, leading to flakes and further itchiness.

  • Blisters or oozing: In case of severe flare-ups and itching, the specific area is affected with tears and cracks, with liquid leaks, worsening the pain.

  • Skin thickening or discoloration: Continuous scratching in the long term can cause the skin to be thickened and discolored due to pigmentation.
