Trichologist Dr Shahid Shamsher talks about impact of weight loss on hair.
1. How does weight loss cause hair fall?
It leads to a condition called telogen effluvium, in which there is a sudden onset of severe hair fall. Hair typically falls off in bunches while combing or washing. In some cases this starts immediately after the weight loss and in some cases even 2-3 months after the weight loss has occurred.
2. Why are women more susceptible to this?
Women tend to have their vitamin counts drop very easily due blood loss that happens in their regular periods. Which is why, many women even when overweight, have latent deficiencies, which are easily exacerbated further with any weight loss program, thus making women more vulnerable than men. The same principle applies to young girls who try to lose even just 2-3 kgs trying to get that perfect figure.
3. Can the situation be corrected?
Telogen Effluvium is fortunately quite correctable. Of course, there should be any other complicating reason of hair loss like pattern baldness or scalp infections. If treated correctly and early, Telogen Effluvium allows a good amount of hair to grow back.
