At my clinic, one of the most commonly asked questions is – “What is this white dandruff-like-substance on my head?”
Persistent dandruff flakes are often the oil or sebum secretion of the scalp. The scalp secretes its own natural oil called sebum which provides lubrication and facilitates the movement of hair. Sebum is like sweat, everybody has it, albeit some people have more of it and some less. When the sebum secretion is on the high side, it tends to accumulate on the scalp surface and cause itching. When the head is scratched, this oily grimy substance it comes out as white particles or substance in the finger nails.
High sebum secretion when maintained properly will not cause any trouble. Failing to do so however, can lead to a host of scalp problems, like constant scalp itching, various infections and hair loss.
